I have added a new posting to my wish list. I want a media nutritionist. Last night I watched one of the popular TV series that my husband checked out on DVD. On the cover it was labeled a “comedy”. In the short course of a half hour all the characters got themselves into various problematic situations and spent most of the time taking drugs, killing animals, comparing and contesting themselves with others, physically and verbally abusing themselves and others, lying, and not once really connecting with themselves or others.
I felt awful after watching it. Two tablespoons of sugar isn’t twice as sweet as one. Just like the latest new soda it seems there is more and more “punch” added to each new video. What will shock the viewer awake this time?
I thought of my favorite movies. In each of them there was something new or beautiful that I admired in the characters. I need to take in stories where the characters can take me to a new place where I want to be. What if those same characters were confronted with the same issues, but behaved differently? What if they really connected?
Tell me where I can find my media nutritionist. Put me on a strict diet of no evening news. Cut out all the filler high in sweets and sappy insincere interactions. Fill the table with whole, raw, organic human relationships. The storyline might taste unusual at first, it might require an open mind to step away from what is expected, comforting, prepackaged and preprocessed. And be sure to read the label – does “organic” really mean “organic”? Does “comedy” really mean “comedy”?
